The novel is set in an unnamed city, and is centered around the main character, named Hugo Rot. At work, and in his private life, he has two friends, Sila Barbarez and Nemet Sram.
Off-Brim is divided into three parts, each of them representing different jobs Hugo has to find, once he’s made to resign from his initial post as a subscriptions and sales, call-center operator, with the Colporteur daily newspaper.
Desperately trying to keep his head above water, Rot makes the best of each of the two new jobs he finds, in part two, and part three of the novel.
In the end he accept his fate, having partaken in the founding of the National Grocers’ Union, for he’s working in a supermarket, and fencing off the corporate management of the supermarket chain, who tries to make him, and the other founding members of the union, quit their jobs, so that their efforts at organized labor would be disbanded.
